"Vocalise"
(another name for this program is "Kiss" or Rodin number)

1994-95 artistic program. Was first performed at Skates of Gold II gala in the fall 1994. Then it was performed at Canada Open 1994, World Professionals 1995, Challenge of Champions 1995, and also in the "Stars On Ice" tour in 1994/95. Choreographer: Marina Zueva. Music: Sergei Rahmaninoff, the last one of his "14 songs", op. 34, no. 14.

One of the most mesmerizing programs. In her book "My Sergei" Gordeeva describes how this program was being planned and made. It was based on Auguste Rodin sculptures , that's why it is called "Kiss". "...she (Marina Zueva -- E.B.) gave us a book of Rodin's sculptures , which we'd bring to the ice rink. Then Sergei and I would try to copy some of the poses in the book." (E. Gordeeva, "My Sergei")

After watching this program I realized, that figure skating is not a sport. Not at all. It's ART. A real art. While I was watching it, I somehow became sad, maybe because I realized that nobody would make anything like that, or because Grinkov is not here any more and we won't see this alive. I don't know. What striked me most was how smooth this program was. You have a feeling that they don't even touch the ice. Everything is linked together, you don't know where the end or the beginning is. Beautiful. But short. Too short. It ended so soon. I didn't even have time to admire it. I guess it's the fate of anything beautiful -- to end soon.
