1993-94 years long program. Was premiered at Skates of Gold I gala in the fall of 1993 -- but then they performed only the actual "Moonlight Sonata" part of the program. Choreographer: Marina Zueva. Music: Ludvig van Beethoven, Sonata # 8 "pathetique" in c-minor, op. 13, first movement; sonata # 14 "moonlight sonata" in c-sharp minor, op. 27, no. 2, first and third movement.
When someone talks about that program, the first thing that comes to
mind is Lillihammer Olympic games in 1994. Then Gordeeva and Grinkoc returned
from the professional into the amateur world to, as it came out, earn their
second olympic gold (the first one, as you remember, was at Calgary Olympic
games in 1988). In her book Gordeeva writes about this program more than
about any other. Because G&G weren't those kids that took Calgary gold
any more, they needed a program more "mature", more, maybe, even difficult
in artistic and sensual sense. "We were showning them not a program, but
the story of our life. If you listen to the Moonlight Sonata, the music
can only represent a man and a woman's life together. It can't mean anything
else... It's more, even, than love. Romeo and Juliet, that music was about
love. But the Moonlight Sonata is for older people who have experienced
real life." (E.Gordeeva, "My Sergei")
Frankly speaking, I don't really remember Lillihammer games. How
old was I then? Well, about fourteen and a half. No wonder I don't remember!
Nobody fourteen years old doesn't think about Olympic games! :) Though
I liked figure skating then. But I don't remember these particular games.
And I am sometimes very angry with myself for it. I guess you know
the feeling.
By the way it is known that the best performance of "Moonlight Sonata"
was actually not in Lillihammer, but in Copenhagen at 1994 Europeans. That's
where they got four (!!!) 6.0 for presentation. Though I don't remember
this competition too :). Gosh, it seems like I didn't live in 1994. Or
on the opposite -- I LIVED. :)
The program itself really seems more "mature" than the one they performed
at Calgary. You can only listen to the music the used there and there.
Feel the difference?
You can write about it more, but I will just say that it is about love
-- but not about the first love (how do they call it -- the first, tender
love or whatever?), but the life that lasts indefinitely and is like the
wine -- the older the better.
